Moral Story: A Trader And His Monkey

A Trader and His Monkey

By: Habeeburrahman Abeebllahi Issah

Once upon a time, there was a trader called Amose living in a Obaada village. He was a very rich trader, he has a pet monkey which he used to take along whenever he was travelling out of the village to sell his products. This man used to travel from one town to the other and from one village to the other selling drink to people.

One day, he was travelling to another far away town as usual,  The thought of making much more money from his drink came to his mind and he decided to mix the drink with a lot of water so as to make as many profit as possible. At this point, all he cared about was to make money, not the welfare of the buyers.

A lot of traders use this method to get more money too, they think it is the right way because they are in haste to get rich, either with legal or illegal way, mixing one thing with the other just to get a lot of money; But this is a very bad way of getting money, it is nothing but just a way of getting them closer and closer to the punishment of their Lord. The best thing is to gather wealth in a  much better, legal and good ways.

However, after the man sold the juice mixed with water, he was returning home while he kept his money in his wallet and  went on his ship with his monkey, he began the counting of his money at the same time was so happy for he made a lot of profit for the day. While the counting was going on,  He started thinking of ways to make more money; But his happiness was short lived  when he found out that his monkey had suddenly taken his wallet  from him and ran to stay at the topmost edge of the ship

The trader was extremely worried and began to beg  his monkey to return the wallet, but the monkey didn’t understand his language nor knew what he was saying.

The monkey put its hand in the wallet, threw a coin of  the money to the man, then, put its hand the second time, threw another coin into the river. The trader was extremely sad, and the monkey continued the same way until half of the money was thrown into the river and half was thrown to the man. After that, the monkey got  down from the top edge of the ship as if nothing had happened. This means that the water that was used to mix the said drink was given half of the money as its share, while the man got half his own for the original drink that belonged to him.

The trader went home very sad, and started thinking about his past actions, and about how he had mixed juice with water to get more money. The trader regretted everything he did thus, from then on, he never mixed juice with water again and he became an honest and well-known trader in his village and its environs.

The moral of the story is:

Never try to find a shortcut to getting rich, so that you don’t regret nor attract punishment to yourself.
