Eidul-Adha Celebration (Facts and Verdicts)

Eidul-Adha Celebration (Facts and Verdicts)

By: Dr. Issah Abeebllahi Obalowu

As-salam alaykum Saas, how are you doing today?

I’m great and very excited for the coming of ‘Ῑdul Aḍḥᾱ. during this celebration, my father always buys new cloth for me and the entire members of the family.

More so, we receive many visitors among the family and friends, and I eat a lot of meat.  Haaaa, I cannot wait to see the day.

I see, that’s so great and amazing! However, do you know any other thing related to the ‘Ῑdul aḍḥᾱ, apart from what you have just mentioned?  Because, a good Muslim should have a bit of knowledge about such a rite that we annually perform.

I don’t really have much knowledge about this festival. All I know is to eat and drink.

Alright, come with me, I will tell you some main aspects of this annual celebration.

firstly, you should know that every nation and every community have a special day for the celebration and displaying of their adornments.  Thus, when our noble Prophet Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him) migrated to Madinah, he found the people of Madinah setting two days apart for the celebration.

So, the prophet asked them: what are these two days? They replied: we used to play in those two days during the pre-Islamic period. Prophet told them: now Allah has replaced those two days with another two days that are better than them: day of ‘Ῑdul aḍḥᾱ and day of ‘Ῑdul-fitr.

Allah has chosen those two days for the Muslims to celebrate, due to their virtue and importance; both of the two days come after the performance of the two great pillars of Islam, which are the Hajj and fasting, in which Allah forgives and spreads His mercy to the pilgrims, those who fast and all His obedient servants.

This is so great and marvelous! Please can you tell me more?

Insha Allah, I will tell you more. let us go and have our seat under the shade of the tree over there.

Saas, in the morning of these days, Muslims go to the praying ground to perform two Rak‘ah in congregation, in order to show their appreciation to their Lord who preserves them upon the goodness of Islam.

Moreover, there are many etiquettes that are recommended for the Muslims on these days, few of them are the following:

It is preferable to have a bath before going to the praying ground.
Putting on the best cloth is recommended.
Eating before going out to the praying ground, especially on Eid Al Fitr.
Chanting of al-Takbir on the way to the praying ground.
Changing of the route while returning home from the praying ground.

For the importance of these days, prophet (may Allah be pleased with him) urged the unmarried young virgins who often stay indoors and the menstruating women to come out to participate in the celebration and the supplication of the believers.

However, the menstruating women should keep away from the praying ground.  He as well urged someone with many cloths to lend another one without cloth, in order to witness the virtue and blessing of those days. Actually, the day of Eid al-Adha is one of the best days of the year.

lastly, I want to tell you a bit about the sacrifice of Eid al-Adha day. In the morning of this day, after performing two Rakah congregational prayer, Muslims offer their sacrifice to Allah, by slaughtering their cattle with the intention of worshiping Allah, in complying with Allah’s commandment in Surah al-Kawthar

Allah says:  “So pray to your Lord and sacrifice to Him alone.”, and the practice of the prophet (peace be upon him). So, Muslims eat from this meat, give their relatives and friends, poor people and keep some of it for the future use.

I really enjoy and benefit from your explanation. Thank you so much,  May Allah reward you abundantly.
