 NOMINAL DUAL FORMS (الاسم المثنى) FOR NOUNS

In our previous lesson, we said that, in Arabic Language, The Dual forms can come in three major ways, which are:

1- Dual Pronouns (الضمائر المثنى) for Pronouns

2- Nominal Duals (الأسماء المثنى) for Nouns

3- Verbal Dual (الأفعال المثنى) for Verbs

Then, we discussed Dual Forms in Arabic Language (For Pronouns). 

Today, we shall discussed the Nominal Forms of Dual, for

 Nouns. which is called "The Nominal Dual"

2.      Nominal Dual (الإسم المثنى)

 

In Arabic language, singular nouns are made dual by adding 

(أ and ن) to their ends. Therefore, the (أ) alif is the only dual

maker while the (ن) nun represents the parsing marks that

usually added to a singular nouns,  which are tanween: 

fathataan (ً), kasrataan (ٍ) and dammataan (ٌ) for indefinite

nouns.

 

Note: It is important to note that the alif and nun (أ and ن) are

usually changed to (ين) yaa and nun when the nouns are in the

position of object or after a preposition. So, (أ and ن) alif and

nun, and (ين) yaa and nun are the dual makers.

 

 

- Alif and nun (أ and ن) are added to the nouns if they are in subjective positions in the sentences: Examples are

 

الاسم المفرد

القلم

الرجل

البنت

 

المثنى في محلّ الرفع 

القلمان

الرجلان

البنتان

 

الأمثلة فى الجمل

القلامان الجديدان

جلس الرجلان على المقعد

جلستْ البنتان على المقعد

 

Alif and nun (أ and ن) are changed to (ين) when the nouns are in objective positions in the sentences: examples are:

 

الاسم المفرد

القلم

الرجل

البنت

 

المثنى في محلّ النصب

القلمين

الرجلين

البنتين

 

الأمثلة فى الجمل

اشتريت القلمين

رأيت الرجلين

ضربت البنتين

 

- Alif and nun (أ and ن) are also changed to (ين) when the nouns are in the positions of prepositional objects  in the sentences:

examples are:

الاسم المفرد

القلم

الرجل

البنت

 

المثنى المجرور

القلمين

الرجلين

البنتين

 

ألأمثلة فى الجمل

كتبت بالقلمين

مررت بالرّجلين

سلَّمت على البنتين

 

- Alif and nun (أ and ن) are also changed to (ين) when the nouns are in the positions of possessive pronouns (مضاف إليه) in the  sentences:

Examples are:

سيارة الرجلين جديدة

The two men’s car is new

 

كتاب البنتين جديد

The two daughters’ book is old
